Dubuque is Iowa's oldest city. The first pernament settler was a French-Canadian fur trader, Julien Dubuque. Julien settled here in 1785 and began to mine lead. After the Black Hawk Purchase Treaty more settlers began arriving in Dubuque in 1833. The town became known as Dubuque when it was chartered in 1837. Our little town grew quickly and by 1860 Dubuque's population rose to 13,000.
Dubuque is famous for four things: lead, lumber, landmarks, and limestone. Lead was mined in Dubuque for many years. The lumber can be seen in all of the Victorian homes which grace our hillsides. Dubuque has thrity-four structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As for the limestone, the Days Inn is actually built in an old limestone quarry.
